El Coto

There is no better feeling than when you come across a winery where the wine gives you the WOW factor. Some twenty odd years ago I came across the wine of El Coto based in Rioja, Spain which is a premium red wine region. El Coto reds which are Tempranilo grape are the preferred Crianza of the Spanish.

The rose Tempranillo and Garnacha is so drinkable, the white is 100% Viura and is of a modern style unlike the sherry whites of yesteryear.

El Coto was founded in 1970 by a group of like minded guys seeking quality. It took 5 years for the first vintage, from 1990 to 1997 the company experienced spectacular growth to now become one of Rioja's leading bodegas.

The word El Coto means Hunting Lodge and the many stags roam the region, so their wine label carries a magnificent stag.

My picture is with the stag outside the Bodega.
