Sherry & Whisky
A glass of sherry on a Sunday morning, especially a dry fino out of the fridge, what better than Tio Pepe by Gonzalez Byass and we have just a few available. Fino En Rama (it's on allocation) limited edition, powerfully aromatic with distinctive flor character. Its 15% volume and 100% palomino grape bottled unfiltered, fabulous with manchego cheese – or olives and of course any tapas dishes you may conjure up.
If Sherry isn't your cup of tea, how about a glass of port with cheese. Try Bowland Cheese sadly from Lancashire, however it's a great creamy version with raisins, apples and coated in cinnamon, it's like Christmas cake and what better a bottle of Grahams Late Bottled Vintage selected from the finest productions of a very good year. It's bottled after spending 5 years in seasoned oak casks, filtered so you don't have to decant. Proper wood aged port which possesses attractive liquorice aromas and a spicy complexity, our current vintage is 2007.
However if the weather turns really cold try a wee dram but for a change try Green Spot, single pot still Irish Whiskey triple distilled, matured in American Bourbon cask and some sherry barrels. It has immense flavour, a note of aromatic oils & spice, hints of cloves on the taste sweet green apple. Single pot still is unique to Ireland and this one comes from cork. It's bottled exclusively for guess who, Mitchell & Son Dublin. Funnily enough I met Mr Mitchell whilst sat at a bar on a long ago holiday in the sun. Having asked each other where we were from and what we did it was two Mitchell's drinking a long afternoon together, Happy Days.
